'The Musalman' The last handwritten newspaper in the world.

The Musalman-Preservation of a Dream
The 'Musalman' is probably the last handwritten newspaper in the world. It has been published and read every day in South India's Chennai since 1927 in almost the same form. In the shadow of the Wallajah Mosque in Chennai, a team of six die hard workers still put out this hand-penned paper. Four of them are katibs -- writers dedicated to the ancient art of Urdu calligraphy. It's tough for the die-hard artists of Urdu calligraphy. But the story we tell here is not just of their desperation and despair. The fact is, at the office of 'The Musalman', the oldest Urdu daily in India, no one has ever quit. They work till they pass on. This is the story we tell.

The Last Time I Walked Into Cholamandal Artists' Village, I Saw So Many Glass Bottles. Gah. So, This Is What It Was?!

Tito Ingenieri, a character from a city called Quilmes, about an hour south from Buenos Aires, has built a massive home made entirely from beer bottles and trash. And by massive, we mean...

By massive we mean 6 million bottles, which have been added to the home along 19 years (at least that's what he claims).

Even if the home doesn't look sleek or chic, we have to give the guy credit for the recycling. Because even though usually beer bottles in Argentina are returnable, Ingenieri takes abandoned and non-returnable bottles from the street and has neighbors saving bottles for him.

He's a famous character in Quilmes and has been subject of many interviews, though this video from Eco-Ideas.net has some impressive images of the whole home, which looks huge. {Read on}{Cholamandal Artists' Village}{Image}

Meat on a String: A Possible Limit to Corvid Intelligence?

raven (Corvus corax)Image via Wikipedia
Corvids - crows, ravens, jays, and magpies - are well known  to be among the most intelligent of birds. Along with parrots, corvids have been a frequent subject of avian intelligence studies. Experiments have documented problem-solving  and tool use, both in the lab  and in the wild. Many of the recent experiments have tested intelligence in New Caledonian Crows (Corvus moneduloides), but tests of Ravens (Corvus corax) and Rooks (Corvus frugilegus) have also found problem-solving capabilities. New Caledonian Crows are a common subect for research because they are known to use a variety of tools in the wild.

A classic test of bird intelligence involves a piece of food dangling at the end of a string. Multiple bird species can figure out through trial and error how to retrieve the food by pulling the string. Corvids and psittacids retrieve the food so quickly that researchers have suggested that these birds may solve the problem at an advanced level. That is, instead of relying on trial and error, these birds might be able to picture a solution in their minds. Experiments with Ravens and Keas (Nestor notabilis) have provided some hints of advanced problem-solving, but the birds have difficulty retrieving food at the end of a string if the string is crossed by another of the same color.

A new PLoS ONE article takes the intelligence tests a step further with New Caledonian Crows. Once again, a piece of meat is suspended at the end of a string. This time, however, the reward is screened from view by a piece of plywood with a small hole in it - just wide enough to pull the meat through. If a crow goes under the board, it can see the food and string. From above the board, it can still see the reward through the hole, but not well enough to judge its distance or whether pulling the string is moving the meat closer. The image shows the setup for this study; this image shows examples of prior experiments. Successful retrieval would require pulling the string part way, stepping on the portion pulled, and then pulling the rest of the string. {Read on}

I love how little time it took me to grasp "EBM" as "Epic Beard Man". I love you, internets.

I think everyone is losing sight of the fact that EBM walked away from the fight and went to the front of the bus. EBM then sat down and eventually was physically confronted by the younger black male and sucker punched. EBM then protected himself by giving the younger black male a proper beating, but held off before doing excessive damage. If you have never been in a fight where you were attacked while in a vulnerable position (sitting) then you can not understand how EBM reacted and how much restraint he showed by not continuing to wallop the punk who sucker punched him.

Was the `arrogant' part really needed? Like, are there any other kinds of Americans? Just kidding! I luv you fat guys!

Looking for a job? Well, if you're an "arrogant American," you had better search elsewhere.
An information technology staffing firm based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., posted an advertisement for a technical writer that warned that an "arrogant American" would not flourish in the position.
"Exelon is looking to provide these proposals to Chinese businesses, so someone who is respectful and understands Chinese culture is preferred. An arrogant American will not work well in this role," the listing read.
The ad, posted by Viva USA, an information technology consulting firm, has since been removed. Varuna Singh, the company's development manager, told FoxNews.com it received the language from its client, Exelon Nuclear Partners, and the wording somehow got past a "junior recruiter" who posted the advertisement on CareerBuilder.com.
"We are taking it down immediately, this was a mistake," Singh said. "This was not wordage by Viva. This was sent into us by the client, but we, as the staffing company, should have looked into it before posting."{Read on}

I would suggest some sort of stimulus package, if ya know what I mean.

Here we see two titans, neither of whom I know or remember, spraying each other with beer. I honestly have no idea who they are or whether this was part of some dark mating ritual or not.

Get rid of Jews and Gays in mathematics and you're left with Ramanujan. It is such a shame that a brilliant mind such as his would be destroyed by ignorance.

(not really of course but both groups are definitely well-represented among top mathematicians.)

Though Ramanujan is rumored to have had a relationship with Hardy, so he might be gone then as well.
