Great anecdote. You made me want to call my parents and tell them I love them.

WHEN I WAS EMPLOYED,

I worked as a rehabilitation therapist.
I have a lot of notes laying around about things that I saw while working in rehab, it was the most grueling 2 years of my life.
I had a toddler and an infant at home, and I'd spend my day teaching adults how to do things they used to know how to do.
For 5 months I worked in a palliative care unit. Most of the people were there because they didn't have family to take care of them, or they needed constant care. Some had dementia.All were horribly miserable.

Here's something I jotted down in my car after a shift:

He is crying.

I've asked him about his wife, what her name was, and he responds in tears.

"Doris!" He is staring into my eyes, he is moved by something I can't pinpoint.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked about your marriage. It is none of my business."

" No, no... it's just.... I haven't said her name in years."

My stomach hit the floor. This is profound shit. More profound than I expected, I don't have experience in responding to this kind of human intensity.
I'm used to, "Yeah, I didn't get any sleep last night." or "This coffee is gross" not a 91 year old man breaking down in front of me over the love of his life that he lost four years ago after spending a lifetime with her. Not this.

Dean shimmies over to his closet without his walker, opens it and locates a large box near the top. He returns to the desk I am sitting at.

He lays it before me. A photo album.

We spend the next 2 hours pouring over his life.
From birth, until his wife's death.

His roommate enters the room. "GO AWAY ANDY!!!" Dean shouts.
Andy hobbles away, no questions asked.

My shift ended 3 hours ago. My family is at home wondering where I am. I'm here, listening to this man I barely know recall his life through tears hitting the desk. This man is truly alone. He is talking a mile a minute, memories rushing back to him. I barely understand what he is talking about. Trips, people, children, cars, pets, homes... He is vomiting his past to me as quickly as his tongue can move.

" I haven't talked about this in years, this hurts."

My dinner can wait.

The snake who's hooked on cigarettes.
You don't want to deny Po the pit viper his regular morning cigarette - he's guaranteed to throw a hissy fit.

That's because the three-year-old reptile from Taipei in Taiwan has become hooked on nicotine, thanks to his owner Sho Lau's 20-a-day habit.

'He is very tame and one day when I threw a cigarette butt away he went for it and seemed to enjoy having it in his mouth,' said 33-year-old Lau.

'One thing led to another and before long he was having one cigarette in the morning and another at night.'

The Czech Republic followed Portugal to become the second European country to formally decriminalise drug possession this week, announcing specific quantities beneath which users will not be prosecuted.

Under the new laws (which come into force on January 1) Czech people will be allowed to possess up to 4 ecstasy tablets. 15 grams (half an ounce) of marijuana, 5 grams of hash and 1 gram of cocaine with prison sentences still a potential threat for those in possession of more.

Legendary Czech club promoter Ales Bleha told Skrufff he's delighted about the new laws though said he expects them to have minimal impact on people in Czech.

"Few people have any problems with drugs here already, unless they deliberately provoke the police or do stupid things and people who already smoke marijuana or use hard drugs will do so the same as before," he predicted. "The Czech Republic is already sometimes called the 2nd Amsterdam or 'Amsterdam of the East'.

"But what's really important about these new laws is that they represent genuine decriminalization which is an important next step towards full legalization which I believe is the only possible solution for dealing with drugs and reducing the damage associated with them. I don't consider drug users as a problem, the problems come from the criminals and mafias involved in selling them," he said.

"I think the quantities they've set are OK too," Ales continued. "At least speaking from my own personal experience, I only smoke marijuana so I can't really speak about the other drugs but I'd certainly never have more than five grams on me."

"I'd also like to thank the many people who never give up this fight and worked hard to explain to the government that it's better to control the drug problem rather than to rely on repression."

"I hope that drugs will be legalized in the whole Europe within the next decade or two," he added, "It is the best way how to take this problem under control because as I already said - the real problem is that presented by drug dealers and drug mafia, not about users. And when drugs are forbidden prices go up and they become more attractive for young people." {Via}
