Trade Wars can create strange by products, but few as tenacious as the picture labels - "Tickets", they were called - produced by rival cloth manufacturing and dyeing firms in the late 19th century Britain. The Rallis were already a well established and successful Greek trading family when two of his sons, John and Eustratio, set up in business in London during 1818. A branch was established in Manchester in 1827. The partners established a branch in Calcutta as early as 1851 and a further branch in Bombay in 1861.

In January 1886 David Shaw went into partnership with Charles Wallace and founded the famous Calcutta agency house. Now Shaw Wallace is an UB Group company.

James Finlay set up as a merchant in Glasgow in 1750. However it was his son, Kirkman Finlay who really expanded the business. After Kirkman's death in 1842 Finlays lacked direction. James Clark was admitted in 1847. He retired in 1867. Muir entered the partnership in 1861. It was John Muir who developed the Indian side of the business. In 1870 he opened the Calcutta house of Finlay, Muir & Co. A Tata Group company Tata Finlay is now Tata Tea.

James Finlay set up as a merchant in Glasgow in 1750. His specialised in the export of cotton goods. However, it was his son Kirkman Finlay who really expanded the business. In 1908 it floated the Swan Cotton Mill in Bombay.
